Welcome to two wheel moped information

Training on Mopeds and Scooters

You have to be 16 years of age to ride a moped or motorcycle up to 50cc. For scooters or motorcycles over 50cc, the rider must be 17 years of age or older.

Scooter training falls into 3 main categories:

Moped

Category 'P' is required on the rider's driving licence (16 years old and above). A moped is a motorcycle that has a design speed not exceeding 50kph and an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc.

'A1' (light motorcycle)

this category is for motorcycles/scooters between 75cc and 125cc with a power output of 11Kw. You must be 17 or above.

'A' (standard motorcycle)

this category is for a motorcycle/scooter between 121cc and 125cc. Category 'A' is required on the rider's driving licence and, again, the rider must be 17 years of age or older.

Licences

Provisional Moped

You can only hold this if you are at least 16 years of age. It entitles you to ride a moped (50cc) on the road as a learner with 'L' plates. You may not take pillion passengers or ride on the motorway.

A provisional licence is only valid when you have a DL196 certificate which is issued on successful completion of a C.B.T. (Compulsory Basic Training) course.
